I used to be the professional and then the tables turned.
Thank you for your time and service to others.
When clients sit across from you, they rarely expected to be there. They never anticipated their child getting sick, their partner’s health failing at a young age, or facing a terrifying diagnosis of their own. I was no different. When my daughter’s health began failing at age five, I struggled to cope. We spent three agonizing years searching for a diagnosis, and during that time, I scoured the internet for resources and comfort—only to come up short. I found one column in the New York Times written by a mom about how scared she was waiting on her son’s diagnosis and it ended with a reminder that I could do this. I read it daily. As a licensed social worker who has spent decades alongside vulnerable populations, I realized I already possessed a wealth of professional tools. Suddenly, I was the one who needed them. Recalibrating Life was born from that realization. I created this site to provide the support, sanctuary, and practical tools I desperately needed during our diagnostic journey, and the ones our family continues to rely on as we manage my daughter’s rare disease. If you feel this resource could benefit your clients, please share it with them. I also welcome your feedback on how we can continue to improve this space for the people who need it most. With Gratitude, Elizabeth Hamilton, MSW, LSW, Mom
My kiddo on her first recumbent bike. Once we embraced the fact that her balance required us to do things differently, her world opened up.
